Specifications

Summary

The LP2’s are your typical bass-head can: Hard hitting bass, sparkly treble, and a recessed mid-range. They are also very comfortable with good sound isolation, and their build is great as well.

They’re a versatile set, and will do well with a variety of genres even though they seem to be heavier on the bass end of things.

Pros

  • Good noise/sound isolation.
  • Very comfortable.
  • Build quality is phenomenal. The chord is made of Kevlar and is very durable. The headphone itself is made of mostly metal. The headband is also quite bendable and flexible.
  • Controlled, hard hitting bass. It’s pronounced but not overpowering.
  • Good storage case and overall packaging.
  • Good Soundstage for a closed back model. What is Soundstage?
  • Longevity. They should last you a long time.

Cons

  • Mid-range has a tendency to become recessed or distant in the mix. The bass won’t muffle the treble, but you may lose some clarity with certain guitar riffs and vocals.
  • Clamping force is a bit tight for some, but may get more comfortable over time.
  • The ear-cups aren’t quite deep enough, and your ear may touch the headphone driver. What is a headphone driver?

Amp/DAC requirements

These do not require an amp. How to choose a headphone amp!

Who these headphones benefit?

Good for:

  • Electronic music
  • Gaming
  • Hard Rock
  • Oldies
  • Hip-Hop
  • Dubstep/Dance/Club
  • Country/Western
  • Pop
  • Jazz

People seem to like these more as a versatile set, and say that they do well with most genres of music. They aren’t very fast though, meaning they won’t do as well with stuff like Metal, Hardcore, etc.

Thoughts from Stu’s notepad

  • These are not noise cancelling headphones, but still do a decent job of blocking out sound.
  • Clamping force of the headphones may feel tight at first, but adjusts nicely over time. The ear-cups may get hot after awhile, and the XL pads are recommended for a deeper and larger space. The stock pads are a bit small.
  • They have a 2 year warranty plus  the immortal 50% program. If for any reason you aren’t satisfied with them after 2 years (broken, etc.), send them back and V Moda will give you a 50% off coupon towards another pair.
  • They come with multiple cable options: 3-button chord with track and volume controls, 1-button with a mic, and a plain, extra long cable. They also come with a cleaning cloth and a 1/4″ adapter. Note: The headphones may not come with all three cables according to some, but they do come with at least 2: The long one with no buttons, and the shorter one with a mic, volume controls, and a pause button.
  • You can also fully customize the headphone with interchangeable face plates of varying colors.
  • The protective coating over the piece that goes over your head may peel after some time. One reviewer mentioned for him it was 3 years.
  • They don’t fold up.
  • If the cable rubs up against your shirt or clothes you may experience some noise from the headphones.
  • The mid-range loses a bit of clarity because of the bass.
  • You will most likely want to revisit your old favorites after listening with these for awhile!

Consensus/Conclusion

Good build, good comfort, with a deep bass response. The mid-range is recessed, and the clamping force is a bit tight. Overall a good set of headphones, but not as good as the M100’s.

Similarities & Differences

Similarities

  • Both have ear-pads that are rather shallow in depth.
  • Both are pretty forgiving of bad source material.
  • Both have the same warranty features (Immortal 50% off program).

Differences

  • The LP2’s cannot be folded up, while the M100’s can.
  • The M100’s have cable jacks on both ear-cups, while the LP2’s only have them on one.
  • They are a little lighter than the M100’s. 260g compared to 280.
  • The mid-range on the LP2 isn’t quite as clear and articulate as the M100.
  • The Soundstage is a bit more compressed on the LP2.
  • The M100’s sound overall is much more refined than the LP2. The mid-range is fixed, and the treble is cleaner.
  • The M100’s only have a mute button on the inline remote, while the LP2’s have a Play/Pause and scroll.

Final Word

There is really no reason to consider the LP2’s over the M100’s aside from the remote. The sound coming from the M100’s is basically just upgraded and fixes all of the sound issues that the LP2 had. Even though the mid-range on the M100’s is still slightly recessed, it isn’t a detriment to it’s sound quality overall. The sound is incredibly detailed, articulate and revealing while still also being extremely fun to listen to. How would you contrast the M100 to the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X ? Thanks

The M100 just slams harder all around. The M100 is also more of a bass heads can than the M50x, though both excel in that department. I would say the M100 has more bass quantity, while the M50x is more articulate and detailed in the bass.

The cable on the M50x has always annoyed me. It’s much too long. They market these as critical listening headphones/mixing cans, but they are more fun and not as good in my opinion for that purpose. A shorter cable would make the M50x a near perfect casual listeners headphone.

Both are very durable. I’ve had the M50’s since January of 2013 and they’ve taken quite a bit of abuse. Likewise the M100’s are made for the same.

Both are comfortable, but the M50’s pads will become cracked and sort of harden over time. They are replaceable however, and I’ve replaced mine because they simply started destroying my ears. This was after about the 2 year mark, so not really a big deal.

I would say overall that the M50x’s are more open and detailed, even though the mid-range is still recessed. The mid-range on the M100 is a bit muffled, but overall the bass has more extreme impact.

What genres do you listen to primarily?
