The problem with all this for me is that a Solid-State amp sounds almost identical to a Hybrid one, and in the case of the MT-604, it’s no different.
Honestly, it sounds about the same as most other amps I’ve tried.
The Bravo Ocean? Yup, it too is a hybrid that sounds mostly like a Solid-State amp. And trust me, I’ve heard over 74 of them at this point.
I actually tempered my expectations somewhat but was still underwhelmed.
“That’s it?”
“What was all the hype about?”
Folks, it’s literally just an amp – and, alongside a DAC, it’s meant to perform a task.

Vacuum Tubes and Transistors

And, I guess it does that? Honestly, it may as well just be a Solid-State amp as far as I’m concerned.
The whole thing seems incredibly counterintuitive. So you’re going to make an amp with tubes that pretty much in no way sounds like a tube amp?
But before I go off on a rant, let’s discuss the volume controls and then the balanced/unbalanced debate so that you’re better armed to make a purchasing decision.

With that, should you actually buy an MT-604 because it offers only balanced connections and has some neat-looking tubes?
My vote is no.
You can get a FiiO K7 which has a balanced jack and be perfectly fine.
There’s nothing inherently special or life-changing about the 604.
It’s just an amp.
