The Best Headphones For Tracking & Recording
Greetings mate and Welcome aboard!
Stuart Charles here, HomeStudioBasics.com helping YOU make sound decisions, so…
When it comes to the best headphones for tracking & recording, the most important consideration to make is isolation. They need to do a good job of minimizing bleed and ensuring nothing you record ends up finding its way into the mix.
So for this rundown, we’ll only be looking at closed-back headphones, as they help mitigate any potential problems and should provide you with an accurate portrayal of what you’re hearing. In other words, sound is also important, but in my opinion, less so.
Comfort and clamping force are also important, so we’ll touch on those things as well.
Let’s dive in!

Sennheiser HD280 Pro
Price: Check Amazon! | Sweetwater! | eBay! | Official Review: Here!

Hoo boy. I’ve dogged this headphone relentlessly over the years, and for good reason.
Scooped mids, weird-sounding timbre, awkward overall tuning, etc. etc. It’s not something I’d ever rely on for mixing or general listening, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. The OG HD280 was pretty bad.
BUT…
It’s always had fantastic isolation, good clamping force/comfort, and a rugged build. Those qualities are exactly what you want when recording vocals or instruments, as they help minimize bleed while keeping the headphones securely in place during long listening sessions. So the 280 made the cut for tracking & recording, but barely.
Sennheiser came out with an updated version in 2016 that saw a revamped headband design, different ear pad material, shorter cable length, and some slight cosmetic changes.
Despite my reservations about its sound, there’s a reason the 280 Pro has remained a studio staple for decades. It’s dependable, isolates exceptionally well, and gets the job done when the priority is recording clean takes rather than enjoying or EQing music.
- Dynamic, closed-ear headphones.Weight w/o cable: 285 g. Ear coupling is circumaural
- Lightweight and comfortable, ergonomic design, Cord Length – 3.3 – 9.8 feet Coiled

- Ear pads, headband padding, and audio cord are easily replaceable, ensuring long life

Shure SRH440/440A
Price: Check Amazon! | Sweetwater! | eBay! | Official Review: Here!

Shure’s SRH440 performs nicely as a tracking & recording headphone, but it’s also tuned really well and works for EQ and general listening.
It clamps well and is decently comfortable, but it has been known to creak around the hinges and can feel fairly flimsy whimsy at times. Not a huge dealbreaker or anything, but should be noted.
What ultimately makes the 440 a solid choice is its versatility. Unlike some tracking headphones that sacrifice tonal accuracy for isolation, the 440 strikes a nice balance between the two.
It isolates well enough for most recording situations while remaining neutral enough to confidently edit, EQ, and even enjoy music afterward.
If you’re looking for one headphone to wear multiple hats in the studio, it’s still a pretty easy recommendation.
In terms of sound, the OG 440 and the newer 440A’s sonic profiles don’t deviate enough to matter for the majority of listeners.
Other updates included a modernized appearance, lighter weight, a simplified, non-folding design, a detachable cable, and updated comfort/build elements.
- MODERN DESIGN, PROVEN SOUND: Built on the legacy of the original, the Shure SRH440A delivers the same accurate, transparent audio with an updated design, enhanced durability, and improved comfort for today’s recording and monitoring workflows
- ACCURATE STUDIO-GRADE AUDIO: A balanced, detailed sound signature with extended frequency response reproduces audio with clarity and precision, making it ideal for monitoring, mixing, recording, and critical listening across music and spoken content
- SEAMLESS DEVICE COMPATIBILITY: Optimized impedance and power handling ensure consistent performance across audio interfaces, mixers, laptops, and portable devices, delivering reliable, high-quality sound whether you’re in the studio or on the go
- ALL-DAY COMFORT & PORTABILITY: Lightweight construction, an adjustable headband, and cushioned earcups provide lasting comfort for long sessions, while the collapsible design makes these headphones easy to store, carry, and use anywhere
- DURABLE, NOISE-ISOLATING BUILD: Closed-back, over-ear design helps reduce ambient noise while keeping sound contained, combined with rugged construction and a detachable locking cable for long-term reliability in daily studio and creative use

Sony MDR-7506

Official Review: Here!

What more can I say about these?
They make the cut easily because resolution and tuning are both excellent, they clamp tightly enough for extended listening sessions, and they isolate well.
They’re also incredibly revealing. Small clicks, pops, breaths, and other imperfections are easy to pick out, which is one reason they’ve remained a fixture in studios for decades.
They’re not my favorite headphone for casual listening, but for tracking and recording, they’ve certainly earned their reputation.

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro X
Price: Check Amazon! | Official Review: Coming Soon!

Beyerdynamic’s DT770 (and now 770 Pro X) has long since been a staple for tracking and recording.
While clamping force and isolation are both excellent, comfort is what really kicks it up a notch like Emeril Lagasse.
For many years, I thought the “most comfortable headphones of all time” moniker these had seemed a bit extreme, but let me tell you something, the comfort of a Beyer is everything you could ask for and then some.
Feeling like pillowy billowy pillows, the 770 Pro X follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, and while some say the sound has been markedly improved, others may tell you to pump the brakes and chill tf out on that one.
Judging from measurements and listener impressions, the changes appear to be more evolutionary than revolutionary. Similar to the 440A, the biggest improvements arguably come in the form of the updated driver, detachable cable, and overall usability rather than a dramatic shift in tuning.
The tuning is largely V-shaped in nature, so any small differences basically don’t matter when your goal is to make music and not obsess over the small, insignificant technicalities of gear.
- Unparalleled Sound Clarity: Equipped with STELLAR.45 driver technology, these closed back studio headphones provide an unmatched sonic experience, capturing every nuance from crisp treble to bass; ideal for professionals listening to identify sonic imperfections in the mix, or audiophiles craving deep immersion in pristine audio and intricate details – enabling perfect mixes and critical listening results effortlessly.
- Optimized for nearly any device: With its versatile 48 Ω impedance, these closed back headphones deliver flawless, high-fidelity audio whether you’re plugged into an interface, laptop, DAC, or amplifier, or hifi audio product; enjoy professional-grade sound quality anywhere, ensuring your creative projects or immersive listening sessions never miss a beat. The included drawstring bag allows easy storage and portability.
- Fatigue-Free Comfort: Experience hours of blissful listening with soft velour ear pads and an ergonomic headband in these closed back headphones; designed specifically to minimize discomfort during extended studio sessions, empowering you to concentrate on your creativity without any distractions, all while appreciating the exceptional build quality and longevity synonymous with high end wired headphones.
- Durable yet flexible connectivity: Featuring a detachable 3M straight cable with a locking mini-XLR connector, plus a threaded adapter from 1/8″ to 1/4″ these closed back headphones offer both security and flexibility; switch between devices seamlessly during recordings or live sessions, knowing your connection is stable and easily adaptable to various equipment setups. This versatile design empowers you to focus on creating unmatched audio experiences without technical hindrances.
- German Craftsmanship and replaceable parts: Engineered with robust, replaceable components, the DT 770 PRO X closed-back studio headphones are a testament to premium ‘Made in Germany’ standards; enjoy peace of mind and exceptional sound quality for years, knowing you have a reliable tool built to withstand the demands of consistent professional use – fusing durability with the highest level of auditory precision, making them your lifelong studio companion.

🥉Beyerdynamic DT270 Pro
Price: Check Amazon! | B&H! | Sweetwater! | Official Review: Here!

We’re approaching Beyer sausage fest territory, but not really.
The DT270 Pro feels like a compact, streamlined take on the 770 Pro X, with better-balanced overall tuning.
It retains Beyer’s familiar bass shelf but opts for a smoother, more relaxed upper mid-range presentation that I found easy to listen to during long sessions.
Like the others on this list, it’s comfortable, clamps well, isolates superbly, and can work as a general listening headphone if you dig some warmth, but I wouldn’t rely on it for EQ because of the bass shelf and somewhat pushed-back mids.
It may not be quite as revealing as the H200 or as versatile as the FT1 in my workflow, but if you’re after a dependable closed-back that excels at tracking while remaining enjoyable for everyday listening, the 270 Pro is an excellent choice.
- Exceptional noise isolation for focused creativity:
- At a mere 6.9 ounces, the lightweight design means you can carry studio-quality sound wherever you go
- Unmatched comfort for long-lasting sessions:
- Enjoy versatile connections
- Designed in Germany

🥈Adam Audio H200
Price: Check Amazon! | Sweetwater! | eBay! | B&H! | Adam Audio!
Official Review: Here!

Adam Audio’s H200, to me, is a very “blank stare” type of sound. There’s some bass elevation, but it doesn’t really come across as boosted when you’re listening, if that makes sense.
To be honest, the overall profile may sound fairly drab and, dare I say dull to some (the treble has a bit to do with this), but overall, this is what you want for tracking & recording, I think. Instead of an overly bright top end, the treble mostly stays out of the way, allowing you to focus on your work.
Combine its fairly neutral profile with a tight clamp and excellent isolation, and you’ve got the recipe for a pretty easy purchase.
All in all, the H200 ranks highly because it helps you get through a recording session without much fatigue. The clamp may cause you to adjust every so often, but it’s a small price to pay for what you’re getting here.
- Take ADAM Audio sound quality wherever you go with the Berlin-designed H200 headphones
- The 40mm PEEK Performance Drivers offer a smooth and balanced 2 Hz – 23.5 kHz frequency response, 112.5 dB SPL, and low distortion. They are combined with a light-weight neodymium magnet system for crystal-clear sound
- Built specifically for the H200, the included ADAM Audio Headphone Utility plug-in offers a range of optimization tools and a spatialization feature that employs advanced crossfeed techniques to improve headphone mixes
- The durable headband, faux leather memory foam earpads, and solid aluminum yoke combine to ensure a comfortable fit and provide excellent isolation when recording or working in noisy environments
- The provided audio cable is 3m in length and attachable to either side of the headphones. Chosen for its durability and low mechanical noise, it terminates with a 3.5mm (aux) connection with a ¼” adapter. A headphone carry bag is also included

🥇FiiO FT1
Price: Check Amazon! | eBay! | B&H! | AliExpress! | FiiO!

To be frank like Donnie Darko, I wouldn’t get mad if someone claimed these aren’t the best. But they’re what I use most often, so therefore they’re the best to me.
And, they’re excellent in all aspects: clamp is good but not overly tight, isolation is very good, and they’re super open-sounding despite being closed. This is what makes them an excellent all-around option and perhaps better than an H200. They have great Soundstage, plenty of good separation, and sound very natural for something with a V-shape lean.
The FT1 is a headphone that gets me in the mood to record some raps, and thems the facts, see?
As it turns out, the best tracking headphone for me is the one that makes you forget you’re wearing it. And that’s the FT1 every day and twice on Sunday, homie!
- Nano wood fiber composite diaphragm: The diaphragm of the FIIO FT1 earphones is primarily made from selected wood fibers, with a base material of 90-year-old spruce from Northern Europe. It incorporates a specific proportion of carbon fiber material, resulting in a diaphragm thickness of approximately 0.1mm. This design achieves a balance of lightweight and durable physical properties.
- W-shaped independent suspension design: Derived from FIIO’s latest self-developed acoustic technology, the W-shaped independent suspension design increases the effective vibrating area of the diaphragm by 25.8% compared to conventional diaphragm designs of the same size. This larger effective diaphragm area and amplitude allow the acoustic core unit to store more sound energy.
- North American black walnut solid wood ear cups: The FT1 earphones feature premium North American FAS grade black walnut solid wood ear cups, known for their exquisite texture that offers an immersive experience of natural beauty from the original wood material. The high-density solid wood not only effectively reduces cavity resonance and minimizes standing waves but also ensures that each piece of wooden ear cup has a unique grain pattern, making it distinctly yours.
- Portable lightweight headband: The FT1 features a steel ball slide rail headband design, significantly enhancing its durability. Compared to other products in its class, the FT1 offers an extensive adjustment range from 0 to 11 notches to accommodate various head sizes. The headband contact area is covered with suede fabric, ensuring a comfortable and breathable experience, making it both refreshing and durable.
- Standard with two oxygen-free copper silver-plated headphone cables: The audio connectors include a 3.5mm single-ended and a 4.4mm balanced plug. Both cables feature identical specifications, utilizing oxygen-free copper with silver plating and containing 392 strands of wire. Each cable measures 1.5 meters in length and has a diameter of 24AWG
Closing Thoughts
Choosing a good headphone for tracking and recording should be much easier than deciding on the best studio headphone for mixing.
Use this list to prioritize what you value most out of the experience, then just buy one and don’t overthink it. All selections here are the ones you should be looking at first, regardless of how I personally ordered them.
Comfort, isolation, and reliability are much more important considerations than sound quality, but that’s just like my opinion man.
Well, that’s about it for today my friend! I hope you’ve enjoyed this best headphones for tracking and recording article and came away with some valuable insight.
